Who sent these kids out to play in traffic?

A brick – the Water Balloons for Brains award – to the three teenagers in a Mitsubishi Montero, at least one of whom allegedly threw a water balloon at a BMW driven by an off-duty police officer. Then, when the officer followed them to a cul-de-sac, the young driver panicked and damaged three cars.

Wait, it gets better.

Reflections on a career in an era of headlines: Though I smiled with envy at many, my favorite passage in “Contrarian,” Peter Kaye's freshly published autobiography, marries two stories spanning the lifetime of America's most famous political dog.

Physically, not fiscally, fitter for a new year: Since the stock market tanked in September, I've lost 15 pounds. No, I'm not wasting away in despair. I'm not sick.

Campaign in Poway: 1st choice is to buy local: As billed in a city of Poway press release, Jim Cunningham, a freshly elected councilman, became the proud owner of a new Ford Taurus at a news conference Tuesday morning.

Who has the G's to take on 'Bulldozer Bill'?: Everybody – OK, a gaggle of political junkies – is talking about the future of Supervisor Ron Roberts.

She will vote for Citizen Obama: On Monday, Chris Young of Oceanside will cast one of the 538 decisive votes for president and vice president of the United States.

Rescue shelter needs a hand, not litigation: To: Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. Re: A case for the birds

Learn how you did on N. County civic quiz: Today, the day that lives in infamy, we have some civic makeup work to do. Thursday, you'll recall, I encouraged you to take a 33-question civic literacy quiz that the majority of randomly selected Americans failed abysmally.

Think you know about N. County? Prove it!: We're dumb. So dumb. That's the (dumbed-down) conclusion of a recent study by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute.

Local conservative pops up in daffy Palin ad: For pure schmaltz, you'd be hard-pressed to cook up a sweeter, fattier dish than the Thanksgiving-themed “Thank You, Sarah Palin” TV ad that just finished airing on cable in the Lower 48 (with extra airings in Alaska).

Encinitas park plans prove to be so divisive: A brick – the Polarized Park award – to the Encinitas City Council for failing, despite endless workshops and meetings and much weeping and wailing, to work out a political compromise over the Hall property, the 44 acres the city purchased in 2001 for a community park.

Sarah Palin 'Thank You' ads: View the Our Country Deserves Better-PAC thank-you ad View the liberal spoof ad

Count your blessings, and hold them tight: I've been slaving for hours over the toast. My wife cooks the turkey for the platter while I serve up the palaver.

Cravens trial recalls a 1992 assault on justice: The first words I ever read about Seth Cravens, the convicted murderer of pro surfer Emery Kauanui, were scrawled on a La Jolla sidewalk.

Postcard generates problem for panel: It's rarely a good idea to irk the ump. But that's what the city of Carlsbad did by creating the dead-wrong impression that the California Energy Commission was soliciting – even paying for – public comment from within the city's own propaganda.

CHP station resolution may be just too obvious: I know just what you're going to say. Who cares?

Closing wallets now worsens the big picture: Remember when President Bush called upon Americans to go shopping in the aftermath of 9/11? He was ridiculed as a superficial cheerleader, but in retrospect, it wasn't such a dumb prescription for a country paralyzed by fear.

New dam notion stirs memories of old film: A recent news story introduced a novel solution to nearly 60 years of hand-wringing over the Santa Margarita River.

Diaz's win a milestone that bodes well for city: Barack Obama made American history Tuesday night. In Escondido, Olga Diaz made her own brand of history, finishing ahead of incumbent Councilman Ed Gallo.

To-do list: Vote, relax with never-do-again list: This fine November morning, I know how Marco Polo must have felt when he was but a day's ride from Kublai Khan's court.

High beam shines on 3 political lowlights: The final days of a political campaign are much like an exorcism. Evil spirits fly out of the body politic at such a furious rate that it can make the head spin. Consider three lowlights of the projectile politicking in North County:
