OCEANSIDE –
The North County Times laid off 34 employees Tuesday, including 25 newsroom staffers, citing the ongoing squeeze on the economy and the newspaper industry.
Publisher Peter York said those who lost their jobs were given one week of pay for every year of service up to 26 weeks. York said the layoffs reduced the size of the newsroom staff to about 85. The publication gave buyouts to about 20 newsroom employees in February.
The daily newspaper is owned by Lee Enterprises of Iowa. York said it has a circulation of about 90,000.
Newspapers across the nation are making sharp cutbacks because of reductions in advertising revenue and the downturn in the economy.
